MedStudy Q&A Internal Copyeditor Instructions

To start, please navigate to http://my.medstudy.com. If not already logged in, you should see a login screen as shown below. Please log in with your email address and password. If you do not know your password, click "Forgot password" to reset it.

Once logged in, under the More heading option, select Submit / Review Q&As. This will open the main entry page for submitting Q&As or Flash Cards.

How to start a copy edit

You can proof the questions from new Q&As, new flash cards, expiring Q&As, expiring flash cards, Errata Q&As and Errata flash cards. Based on the category of questions you want to choose, click the blue button labeled Start a copyedit displayed under each category.  To continue working on the existing questions click on Continue a copyedit.

You are now viewing a list of questions that are ready to be proofed. You will see a filter box on the left side to narrow down your search. You will be able to proof the questions from the topics which you have access to. Once you apply all the filters on the top right side you will find the total number of questions available to be proofed.

You may choose any question from the list.  Simply click on the question and you will begin your review.  If you are uncertain and would like to view the question first, click on either Show Entire Question or View Preview.

How to make changes to a Question

Once you click on a question you are now the assigned copyeditor for that item and you will be taken to the question editor page.

Note: If you do not want to copyedit this item, you must return it following these steps:

  1. Click on the blue Select Action button.
  2. Select Don't Review
  3. The question is now returned back to the pool, available for someone else to copyedit
You may change the topic to which the question belongs to and also edit various parts of the question, including Stem, Question, Explanation, Answers and, if applicable, the Board Testing Point. You may modify any of these as necessary to ensure quality.

At each question area, you will see a tiny comments icon.  If you click this, it allows you to read existing comments on that section, and you may add new comments.  The number next to the comments icon will display how many comments have already been made against that section.  If no number exists, there are no comments yet.

When you have finished checking each section of the question, enter a comment in the Activity and Comments area.  You can use this to simply make mention that the question has been proofed or you may include more detailed comments relating to changes you've made in the question, or why you're choosing to push back the question.

Once you are done proofing the Question, you may select one of the several actions from the Select Action menu:
  • Submit - Use this option if you are done with the proofing of the Question.
  • Push Back - Use this option if you want to send back the question to the previous reviewer or medical editor (depending on question status).  You should be very detailed in you comments when pushing a question back, to ensure the reviewer understands what additional information or changes you are looking for.
  • Don't Review - As mentioned earlier, use this option if you decide not to review the question and you would like to return it to the list for someone else to review.
  • Show Changes - Prior to submission or saving the question, you can view the changes you have made.  This will open a small popup showing the differences.
  • Undo Changes - This will undo changes only since the last time the question was saved. Once you perform this action, you cannot undo it and the changes are lost forever.
  • Save Changes (and continue working) - This allows you to save the changes you have made so far, and continue reviewing the question.  We recommend you use this frequently if you are making many changes or comments, to protect from losing work should your browser tab accidentally close or navigate away.
  • Save & Close - You can save your review and continue with it at a later time.  You must come back to the question later to complete the review.
  • Close (without saving) - This closes the question without saving any changes you have made.  You will need to come back to the question later to complete the review.
Once you Submit, Reject, Save & Close or Close the question, you will return to the Question List View where you originated from.  You may start another review here by clicking on another question in the list.

Question History

To view the Question history on the bottom of the Question editor page, click on the Show all histories button. It will display the complete history of the question right from the point it is submitted.  By default, only history records where changes have been made to a part of the question are displayed, as these are deemed the most important.  Other history records are primarily for auditing purposes to follow the workflow of a question.

When a question is updated at certain stage a View Question button is displayed on the right side. Click on View question will open the question preview in a new tab at that stage. Click on the dropdown icon you will see various menu options.

  • Compare with Current Question - View the changes that have been made at this stage when compared to the current question. The changes are displayed in a pop up window.
  • Compare with Previous History Question - View the changes that have been made at this stage when compared to the previous history question.
  • Revert Question back to this - Revert the current question to this state of the question.  If you do this and decide you want to undo it, click Undo Changes from the Select Action dropdown.

How to continue a Review

If you have closed a review without submitting or pushing it back, you must continue it at a later time, otherwise it will remain assigned to you and become stale.  To do this, you will click the Continue a Review button from the main page.

You are now taken to a list of questions that are currently assigned to you. You may click on any question here to continue the review, and follow the steps above to submit, reject or give it back.

View your entire Copyedit History

To view all reviews you have previously submitted, and reviews that are in progress, click on Continue a review from the main page (as if you're simply continuing an outstanding review), and once there, click on the box in the upper left labeled "Click here to view all expiring questions you've reviewed."

You are now taken to a list view where you can review every question you've reviewed, Q&A or Flash Card, and you can view a brief history of the actions you've taken.  The questions are listed in chronological order with the most recently reviewed questions on the top. You can click on a question to view it and read other reviewers comments about the question.
